Orthography

Both Hiragana/ Katakana

Two write voiced sounds (g-, z-, d- and b-) two little strokes are added in the upper right corner. To write a p-, a little circle is added.

i.e.: ka ( / ) è ( ga ( / ); ha/wa ( / ) è ( pa ( / ) (see alphabets)

broken sounds do not have an equivalent in Japanese either, so they are constructed with two signs

i.e.: kya (きゃ / キャ); kyo (きょ / キョ) (see alphabets)

Hiragana

  • long vowels (ā, ii, ū) are characterized with an additional , or

  • a long ē/ei is written with an additional or

  • a long ō is written with an additional and sometimes

  • short suddenly ending vowels are characterized with an additional after the syllablesign

  • suspended sounds are characterized with an in front of the syllablesign (to create a double consonant)

Katakana

  • long vowels written in katakana are labeled with an extensionstroke

  • short suddenly ending vowels are characterized with an additional after the syllablesign

  • suspended sounds are characterized with an in front of the syllablesign (to create a double consonant)
